Underground Cinema takes Melbourne back to the Future

The kind folks at Underground Cinema gave The Lurid Republic a double press pass this Saturday to see the first Underground Event of the year themed “Back To The Future”. With over a year and Half behind them in production experience it was obvious that the night was finely tuned, well read and an all round success in our eyes. Catching the Weribee train to Newport we were “transported” to another dimension. The event was set at The Substation in a beautiful old factory conversion, just a stone's throw from Newport Station. The start of the night’s events began with a larger than life “homeless” young man carranging newcomers with his plights about the Apocalypse and cryptic messages to get one wondering just what the night’s film might be…not to mention the crowd pulled a veritably impressive hiatus of costumes to fit the "time travel" theme.

When we entered the venue the lower level of the building was reserved for insanity, with an entrance staged with Inquisition Platform complete with Panel of Scientists and Infirmary Mental Asylum and Correction Rooms. All of which were filled with all sorts of wild insane types that weren’t afraid to break the age old boundary of “personal space”.
The top level was the Cinema and Bar and the screening began with a set of scientists informing the audience about their chances of receiving an “official pardon” if they chose to ‘volunteer’ to collect surface samples. Broadcast then moved to the big show,"Twelve Monkeys" Directed by Terry Gilliam. Starring Bruce Willis, Jon Seda, Vernon Campbell & Brad Pitt. Brad's performance was paramount and gave the film the diversity it needed to pack a real Arthouse punch. Although at times the plot was slightly confusing, it was an all round great 90's flick.
Full of weirdos, Junkies and Mentally Enlightened types the night was well worth it and I wholeheartedly recommend you wedge $30 out of that dusty old wallet and make your next Saturday night out a theatrical one.
